Summary

This full-day tour of Somme will take you to the historic battlefields, landmarks and monuments of the region. Somme is located in the north of France. The region's central area was the site of series of battles during World War I including the Battle of Somme in 1916.

At 9:00 am, you will be picked up at the Arras station's main entrance. Depart for Le Hamel where the Americans fought alongside the Australians under the command of Gen Sir John Monash. Follow the trail of the 1918 battles around Amiens and visit Villers Bretonneux School and Museum to discover a once thriving town rebuilt by Australians and French, a strong bond of friendship that is honoured by the inhabitants of Villers-Bretonneux up until now. Continue to Adelaide Cemetery.

Make your way to the new Monash Centre (opened late April 2018) where you will be able to purchase something for lunch and have time to explore the new Australian visitors centre and the Australian National Memorial to the Missing. Spend two hours at the centre and memorial and then head to North passing the Crash site of the Red Baron to the 1916 Battles of the Somme.

Discover the underground warfare and see the awe-inspiring Lochnagar mine crater at La Boiselle. Follow the footsteps of the diggers into the line on Pozieres ridge and stop at Casualty Corner, where many soldier wounded at Pozieres Ridge passed through this triage point.

Visit the Pozieres Ridge and the Gibraltar Blockhouse, the Australian 1st Division Memorial, the Windmill Australian Memorial, the Tank Corps Memorial, Mouquet Farm, and Thiepval Somme Visitors Centre.

Explore Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland memorial park. Here you can see preserved trenches and section of the original 1916 front line. Discuss tactics aims and objectives and the outcome of the 1st July 1916.

Drop off in Arras at 6:00 pm.

Note: The Sir John Monash Centre will be closing from 17 December 2018 and reopening on 14 January 2019.
