Stop in Villepinte to replenish your provisions. Upstream of Villepinte Lock, look out for the Mézéran Aqueduct.

Spend some time in Bram, a pretty village built on a circular plan with a 13th century church at the heart. The Archaeology Museum is also a must see.

In Villesèquelande, don't forget to see the pretty church and the clock Sully Elm regarded as one of the oldest elms still alive in France.

See the breathtaking Carcassonne, a UNESCO-listed, fortified citadel with 3km of ramparts, a castle, cathedral and shops and restaurants.

In Trèbes, try some excellent local produce including wine, olives, jams and confits, then experience the charming landscapes of Cavayère Lake.

Visit the wonderful cooking school in Millepetit and learn how to create classic French cuisine with a modern twist!

Enjoy the scenery at Marseillette, famous for growing rice and for its magnificent clock tower at the centre.

Discover Puicheric, a medieval village with a lovely church and a major hub for watersports – you can hire canaoes or kayaks on the adjacent River Aude.

Touch down La Redorte, a pretty and leafy town built around a grand Chateau which has been transformed into a luxury hotel with an excellent restaurant.

Arrive in Homps and take a tour of the local vineyards, sample quality wines, and let the kids enjoy all kinds of watersports at Lac de Jouarres.

Get awestruck with the stunning Notre-Dame de l’Assomption or enjoy wine tasting at the historic Paraza Chateau.

Tour the small museum Grenier des Vignerons and sample the wines in the waterside wine cellar at Château de Ventenac-en-Minervois.

Soak in the scenery as you walk along Argeliers' 700m tree-lined avenue leading to the town with a handful of restaurants, bakeries, and cafe.

Stock up on provisions in a small market in Capestang and enjoy passing under the stone bridge - one of the lowest bridges on the canal.

Uncover the gems of Poilhes, a beautiful canal-side village with a small shop and a handful of lovely restaurants.

At the west of Colombiers you'll find the Malpas Tunnel, the first canal tunnel in Europe. The town also has an electricity point and port with fresh water.

The Fonserannes Locks are among Riquet’s most ingenious engineering solutions, consisting of a staircase of locks with eight chambers.

Discover Béziers, the capital of Languedoc’s wine industry and birthplace of Pierre-Paul Riquet, who was responsible for building the Canal du Midi.

Drop by the lively village of Villeneuve-lès-Béziers and stock up on supplies at the Spar supermarket and explore its several bars and restaurants.

Just 200m from the canal lies the large Intermarché supermarket in Cers. Replenish your stocks or just take a stroll across this pretty little town.
