Summary

Visit the most important Roman and medieval monuments in Nimes and Uzes. Don't miss the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pont du Gard. Tour Les Baux de Provence and enjoy wine and olive oil tastings.

This tour departs from Avignon.

Schedule:
Summer/Winter: 8:30 am to 6:30 pm

Itinerary

Nîmes is a great city of the arts, proud of its prestigious Roman past. Visit the ancient Roman monuments: the amphitheater (entrance ticket and audio guide included) ; when events such as concerts or bullfights occur, the amphitheatre will be closed and the visit will be replaced by a video in the Maison Carrée (or Square House), one of the best preserved temples in the Roman world.

Visit Uzès, a wonderful medieval town and the first Duchy of France, set in the garrigues countryside (Mediterranean vegetation). Uzès has preserved its layout as a medieval stronghold, embellished in the 17th and 18th centuries. Discover the Place aux Herbes (picturesque square), the episcopal palace, the ducal palace, the Fenestrelle Tower (a unique bell-tower) and the Cathedral. Outside of Uzès is the catchment area of the Roman aqueduct (Pont du Gard) that brought spring water to Nîmes.

Visit Pont du Gard which dates back to the first century and is classified by UNESCO, it's the most amazing and best-preserved part of the Roman aqueduct.

Admire Les Baux de Provence, a medieval village labeled as "one of the most beautiful villages in France". This immense and superb stone fortress is without doubt one of the "must-sees" on the Provencal tourist trail.

Taste olive oil in a mill in Les Baux de Provence valley, one of the most beautiful landscapes of olive groves in Provence, where olive-oil, cracked olives and black olives are entitled to the A.O.C. Label. The unusual feature of this A.O.C. olive-oil is that it is made from a blend of several varieties of olives. It is the subtle blend of these varieties, a secret jealously guarded by each producer that gives to the oils a whole range of different flavours.

Enjoy a wine-tasting in an estate at the foot of the Alpilles hill range. The wines of Les Baux are defined by the unique, multi-faceted character of the soil, naturally protected and dried by the mistral wind. The Baux de Provence wines have been officially recognized since 1995 by a "Registered Designation of Origin" (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée).

Free time for lunch (not included) on your own during the day.

  • Entrance fees to monuments and wine-tastings as mentioned in the itinerary
