Itinerary

Montargis to Chatillon-sur-Loire

Day 1, Sunday

Time enough for a walking tour of the pretty village of Montargis before dinner on board.

Day 2, Monday
This morning, you will embark on your first cruise through the Loire countryside, with great towpath walking and cycling opportunities, to moor at Montbouy. After lunch on board, you will visit the Château de Fontainebleau, a national museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site where you will enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the French Military School of Horse-riding, accompanied by a passionate French Colonel. You will continue your tour through the magnificent château itself; the only royal and imperial residence to have been continuously inhabited for seven centuries. To walk the halls of Fontainebleau is to stroll through the history of France. Enjoy dinner on board.

Day 3, Tuesday
This morning you will visit the privately-owned Château de La Bussière, known as the ‘fishermen’s castle’, with its wonderful ornamental and vegetable gardens. Following lunch back on board, you will enjoy an afternoon cruise to the mooring site at the pretty village of Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses, near its 350-year-old 7 lock-flight, which is well worth visiting on foot. Dinner on board.

Day 4, Wednesday
After a leisurely breakfast of fresh croissants, baguettes and assorted pastries you will visit Gien, home of the Faience pottery, renowned for its beautifully decorated and vibrant dinnerware, and also explore the town’s bustling market. After lunch, you'll enjoy an afternoon cruise to La Gazonne, a beautiful mooring surrounded by lakes and ponds that provide water for the workings of the Canal de Briare. Dinner ashore at the Michelin-starred Auberge des Templiers in Les Bezards.

Day 5, Thursday
A morning cruise to the mooring site at the little town of Briare, site of Gustave Eiffel’s magical aqueduct across the River Loire, again with excellent walking and bicycling opportunities. You'll preview Friday’s crossing of this amazing 10,000 ton, 662 metre Pont Canal which was completed in September 1896. You'll have an afternoon visit to a renowned winery in Sancerre, such as Domaine Henri Bourgeois in Chavignol, for a tour and private tasting.  This medieval hilltop village overlooks a vibrant region which has known viticulture since Roman times. Dinner on board.

Day 6, Friday
This morning you'll wander around fruit and vegetable, seafood, cheese and French fashion stalls in the market in Briare before returning to the hotel barge for a short cruise across the aqueduct and lunch on board. This afternoon, you will visit the delightful Château de Ratilly and its rather spectacular selection of turreted towers, construction of which began in 1270! Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.

Wine Appreciation Itinerary

If you are wine connoisseur, you will enjoy this itinerary. Addtional visits include Sancerre, Chablis and Pouilly Fumé. This wine itinerary is available for charter groups.

Day 1, Sunday
You are met at a location of your choice in central Paris and transferred by private chauffeured minibus to the spacious Renaissance where a Champagne welcome with canapés awaits and you will meet your Captain and crew. You will enjoy a short evening cruise to Briare, crossing Gustave Eiffel’s magical aqueduct over the River Loire, an amazing 10,000 ton, 662 metre structure, which was completed in September 1896. Dinner on board.

Day 2, Monday
Morning visit to a renowned winery in Sancerre, such as Domaine Henry Bourgeois, in Chavignol for a tour and private tasting. This medieval hilltop village overlooks a vibrant region which has known viticulture since Roman times. Alternatively visit the delightful, privately owned Chateau de la Bussierre known as the ‘Fisherman’s castle’ with its wonderful ornamental and vegetable gardens.

After lunch, you will enjoy an afternoon cruise to La Gazonne, a beautiful mooring surrounded by lakes and ponds that provide water for the workings of the Canal de Briare. Here, your expert wine guide will join you to give an introductory talk on the vineyards of Burgundy and leads an on-board wine tasting. Dinner on board.

Day 3, Tuesday
This morning, your wine guide escorts you on a visit to Domaine Chatelain, a winery founded nearly 400 years ago on the right bank of the River Loire in St. Andelain and maker of some wonderfully flinty Pouilly-Fumé wines. Here you'll enjoy a winery tour and of course, a private tasting. After lunch return to the barge and you'll cruise further along the canal, with plenty of opportunities for walking or cycling along the towpath, to the mooring at Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses near its 350-year-old 7 lock-flight, which is well worth exploring. Dinner on board.

Day 4, Wednesday
After a leisurely breakfast of fresh croissants, baguettes and assorted pastries, you will visit Gien, home of the Faience pottery, renowned for its beautifully decorated and vibrant dinnerware. There is also time to explore the bustling market. After lunch back on board, you will enjoy a relaxing afternoon cruise to the lovely village of Montbouy. Dinner ashore at the Michelin-starred Auberge des Templiers in Les Bezards.

Day 5, Thursday
An early departure after breakfast as your wine guide takes you on a tour of the vineyards and town of Chablis, dating back to Roman times, where you will enjoy a private wine tasting at a winery such as the long-established Domaine Fevre. Owned by award-winners Nathalie and Gilles Fevre, the domaine makes the most of the region’s wonderful local terroir to produce high quality wines. You will return to the barge for a slightly late lunch on board then leave Montbouy for a gentle cruise to just outside the village of Conflans-sur-Loing before the barge's peaceful mooring. Dinner on board.

Day 6, Friday
You will enjoy a morning cruise through Little Venice, past flower-bedecked bridges and medieval watercourses joining France’s oldest canal. Your visit this afternoon is to the splendid Château de Fontainebleau, a national museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. To walk through this palace is to walk through the history of France. It is the only royal and imperial château to have been continuously inhabited for seven centuries and every French royal family has added its own architectural style and features when in residence. Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.

Day 7, Saturday
After breakfast, guests are transferred by private chauffeured minibus to their choice of location in Paris.
