Summary

Experience the beautiful countryside of Provence as you visit some of the most beautiful and scenic villages in France including Gordes and Roussillon.

This tour departs from Avignon.

Schedule:
Summer: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm

Itinerary

Drive to Fontaine de Vaucluse : walk up to the cave from which the River Sorgues emerges. This impressive resurgence spring hasn't revealed its secrets yet and many speleologists have searched in vain the exact depth of the well.

Continuation to the hilltop village of Gordes and its cascade of white houses that almost tumble down the hillside : photo stop to picture one of the most beautiful village in France. After a 15-minute drive, you will reach Roussillon, a picturesque and unique spot in Provence. The hill on which the village develops, is composed of ochre rock of various shades featured on the facades of the local houses. Enjoy a short and easy hiking trail called “The Ochre Path” through a former ochre quarry and the surrounding woods (entrance ticket included). Free time for lunch on your own (not included).

On the way to Bonnieux, take a look at the Roman bridge Pont Julien, one of the numerous Roman remains in Provence. Free time in Bonnieux, this perched village located on a Luberon promontory, is an ideal base to explore the area. A road winds back and forth up through the village, passing small squares with shops and cafés at different levels. Walk up to the old church dating back to the 12th-century.

Continuation toward Menerbes, passing through the village of Lacoste, once the residence of Marquis de Sade, for a photo stop. Menerbes became worldwide famous thanks to the writer Peter Mayle who chronicled his first year as a British expatriate in Menerbes in his book « A Year in Provence ». Free time to discover the village. End the day with a wine-tasting in a domain located down the village. Taste 3 different wines produced in this family-run winery.

Inclusions

  • Entrance fees to monuments and wine-tastings as mentioned in the itinerary
  • Transportation in a minivan
  • Pick-up service from hotels in Avignon except for Arles.
