Summary

Experience the very best of Provence during this exhilarating, 5-day cycling tour. Provence is one of the most popular regions of France offering diverse landscape and interesting landmarks. Your cycling holiday will start in Avignon, a historic town know for the Pope's Palace, then explore Pont du Gard, an ancient aqueduct spanning the Gardon River. You also have an opportunity to visit Châteauneuf du Pape and Saint Rémy de Provence.

Itinerary

Day 1, Arrive in Avignon
Upon arrival in Avignon, you can take a taxi to arrive at your charming hotel in the center of Avignon just near to the Palais des Papes in central Avignon. After checking, you are free to explore the rest of the day in this charming town. You're free to do the treasure hunt program on your own this afternoon and then your guide will correct it at orientation the next day. In three riding days, you can choose from several itineraries, the following itineraries are examples. You can also request for longer, more challenging rides. This format allows for people of all abilities to come along, including non-riding participants. You can do visits by car and try some spa treatments to fill your exciting day in the Avignon area.

Dinner included.

Day 2, Pont du Gard & Gardon River (21 mi or 34 km)
Your guide will come to meet you and do an orientation to get you well started on your activities. Then, you (and your group) will be driven to Collias where you can start a canoe trip. You will be transferred with your bikes so after the canoe trip you can return back to the hotel by bike. This is your day to see the Pont du Gard, the 2000+ year old Roman aqueduct spanning the Gardon River on which you will canoe. The Pont du Gard is a marvel of history and a nice ride by bicycle through fragrant Provence. Canoe trip is about 2 hours.

Breakfast included. Dinner on your own.

Day 3, Cycle to Chateauneuf du Pape (41 mi or 66 km)
Today is a loop to Chateauneuf du Pape. This charming wine village just to the north of Avignon is a perfect first ride. It is flat and picturesque with vines surrounding the old town of Chateauneuf. You have all day and mostly flat terrain to cover and a lunch in Chateauneuf with the local product is highly recommended before visiting and return to Avignon. Since you stay at the same hotel, you can decide to go for another ride today instead of going today to Chateauneuf du Pape. Your local guide will explain to you when it is the best to do which ride every day.

Breakfast included. Dinner on your own.

Day 4, Visit St Remy or Tarascon - Option 1: 30 mi (49 km) Option 2: 47 mi (76 km) Option 3: 59 mi (95 km)
Today, you will have the possibility to choose between 3 itineraries from the shortest to the longest one according to the time you want to spend on the bike:

  • The short option (1) takes you to Barbentane and the impressive Abbaye of St Michel de Frigolet.
  • With the medium option (2) you go deeper in the south of Avignon and the charming village of Tarascon, still including the Abbaye of St Michel de Frigolet and Barbentan. On the long option
  • (3) You will add the well-known town of St Remy de Provence to your ride of today.

Suggestions for non-riders: as you are so close to sites in central Avignon, there are numerous activities: Palais des Papes (Popes Palace), Avignon Bridge, walking the old streets of Avignon and visiting museums, or especially the arts. In July, the Festival of Avignon is a huge performing arts program at multiple venues.

Day trips by minivan can be arranged as well as tours to lavender sites, olive presses, and villages of the Luberon and beyond.

Breakfast included. Dinner on your own.
