Description

Summary

Today, depart from Bordeaux and head towards the Bas-Armagnac producing region to discover all there is about to know about this brandy. We will first take you to a local winery that has decided to promote not only the Armagnac but also the "terroir", the crafts, traditions and local life of the wine makers. Here, you will discover traditional farm houses that date back to 17th century and that are built in local sandstone (with fossils), their roofs are made of Roman tiles laid on oak beams entirely hand carved. Within the buildings the different kinds of works and activities made by the wine makers and farmers of those days are illustrated by over a thousand tools. During the visit, you will also discover the still that is used every November and December to produce the local Armagnac. Next to the impressive copper Still, you will also admire 11 other still on display including a reproduction of a model dating from 3500 BC. After the visit of this property, you will enjoy a tasting of the local brandy including Armagnac and the lesser 'Floc de Gascogne'.

Then, depart for the traditional village of Labastide d'Armagnac, a XIIIth century Bastide, where you will have some time for lunch and personal discovery. After lunch, we will take you to one of the most famous ageing cellars of the region where some exquisite Armagnac's are blended. After distillation, the Armagnac is set to age in oak casks called «pieces». Most of these 400 liter casks are made from wood from the forests of Gascony or the Limousin area and are kept in cellars where the temperature and humidity levels are important factors for the ageing. As the woody flavors gradually become more refined, they gain aromas of vanilla and prune, and rancio appears with its characteristic aromas of dried fruits and the degree of alcohol diminishes progressively as the alcohol evaporates (the “angel's share”). The brandy turns a beautiful amber, then mahogany color. Here, you will have the opportunity to taste various selections, blends and vintages so that you may better understand the craft behind Armagnac wine making.

After the tasting return to Bordeaux.
