Summary

Follow the footsteps of New Zealanders who fought in a series of battles during World War I. Explore historic landmarks, battlegrounds, and cemeteries to commemorate their heroism. This 3-day tour will take you to Somme, Artois, and Ypres.

Departure Time: 9:00 am
Meeting Point: Arras

Itinerary

Day 1
You will be picked up in Arras at 9:00 am and then depart through a comfortable 8-seat minivan to get a view of the Lochnagar Crater. The tour will continue to the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, where the Unknown Warrior was exhumed in 2004, and then to New Zealand Memorial to the Missing, which commemorates 378 officers and men of the New Zealand Division who were killed in the vicinity, with no known grave.

Head to other important sites that hold a special place in New Zealand's military history, such as Longueval and High Wood, the scene of New Zealand’s first involvement in the Battle of the Somme on 15th September 1916.  Stop by the Thiepval Visitors Centre, just a short distance from the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme and the Thiepval Anglo-French Cemetery.

Visit the Hamel preserved trenches to see a preserved section of the original 1916 front line. Explore Mailly Maillet and La Signy farm, reliving the scene of the New Zealanders success against the German offensive of March 1918. Visit the Carrière Wellington (underground tunnels and memorial dedicated to the work of the New Zealand tunnellers).

Then, continue onto to Le Quesnoy to honor the heroic capture of this walled town on the 4th November 1918.
