 ANZAC DAY 2011

On 23–24 April 1918, the Germans captured Villers-Bretonneux and advanced out of the town along the railway line westwards towards Amiens. That night, 24–25 April, six battalions of the AIF counter-attacked to the south and north of the cemetery, encircling Villers-Bretonneux, and retook the town. This famous action heralded the end of the German advance of March–April 1918 in the Somme area.

Discover the Somme battlefields with our guide and on 25 April  join the official ANZAC Day Dawn Service and the official ANZAC Day Community Service.
