On 23–24 April
1918, the Germans captured Villers-Bretonneux and advanced out of
the town along the railway line westwards towards Amiens. That
night, 24–25 April, six battalions of the
AIF counter-attacked to the south and north of the
cemetery, encircling Villers-Bretonneux,
and retook the town. This famous action heralded the
end of the German advance of
March–April 1918 in the Somme area.
