Cruise Highlights:

Burgundy is a region of France in which gastronomic delights and the art of living have reigned supreme since Roman times. Excursions are arranged to places with story-book names, whether it be the quaint town of Dole, the famous museum in Dijon, the castle in Châteauneuf or to Besançon, birthplace of Victor Hugo.
 

Itinerary 1 - Rogny to Guetin

Sunday - Paris to Nevers. Moor in Rogny les Sept Écluses.
Depart Paris, Gare de Lyon, on the TGV train this afternoon. On arrival at Nevers station you are met by the Afloat in France guide who transfers you to the barge at Rogny les Sept Écluses on the Canal de Briare. A champagne reception welcomes you on board and gives you a chance to meet the crew. Enjoy your first dining experience on board.

Monday - Cruise to Châtillon-sur-Loire. Visit St. Fargeau
Today, the barge traverses the river Loire via the longest canal bridge in Europe, connecting the Canal du Briare to the Canal Latéral à la Loire. Rogny is the site of the oldest canal lock in France, a seven-step staircase lock built in the 16th century. After lunch visit the beautiful Château de Saint-Fargeau with a history spanning a thousand years.

Tuesday - Visit Gien and La Bussierre. Cruise to Léré.
After breakfast, visit a faïence factory in the beautiful town of Gien followed by an excursion to the historic Chateau of La Bussiere with it's imposing setting and medicinal gardens. Return to the barge and enjoy a wonderful lunch while cruising southward to Léré, a pleasant countryside mooring.

Wednesday - Cruise to Ménétréol. Visit Sancerre.
Late morning visit Sancerre, situated on an impressive hilltop, and have lunch in the town. This afternoon enjoy a private wine tasting at the fabulous 15thcentury Chateau Tracy, one of the most prestigious producers in the Loire, where you can taste their Pouilly Fume.

Thursday - Cruise to Passy (La Charité-sur-Loire). Visit La Charité-sur-Loire.
Take a short walk over to a local cheese producer to see the famous 'Crottin' goats cheese being produced. The barge continues its cruise from Ménétréol towards Charité-sur-Loire and moors in rural Passy. This afternoon, visit La Charité-sur-Loire, an important site of Burgundian Romanesque art and a renowned resting place for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela.

Friday - Cruise to Le Guétin. Visit Nevers and Aprémont.
Enjoy a walking tour of Nevers, the capital of the Nivernais, and a chance to buy some of the distinctive blue and gold faience at the market. This afternoon take a short drive to Aprémont, one of the most beautiful villages in France, to visit the private Château and gardens. Farewell gala dinner on board.

Saturday - Nevers-Paris.
After breakfast disembark the barge and transfer to the Nevers rail station. Return to Paris (Gare de Lyon) on the TGV where you are met by our Afloat in France representative who will assist you with your luggage.


 

Itinerary 2: Digoin to Guetin

Sunday - Paris to Montchanin
Depart Paris, Gare de Lyon on the TGV train in the afternoon. On arrival at Le Creusot station you are met by the Afloat in France guide who will escort you on your transfer to Digoin where you will board the barge for your cruise. A champagne reception welcomes you and gives you a chance to meet the crew.

Monday - Visit La Clayette. Cruise to Diou.
Enjoy a drive through the countryside to see La Clayette, its château and the specialty chocolate factory of M. Bernard Dufoux. The master himself demonstrates the art of making chocolate, followed by a private tasting.

Tuesday - Cruise to Garnat-sur-Engièvre. Visit Bourbon Lancy.
Today's visit is to the beautiful medieval town of Bourban Lancy. Enjoy a guided walking tour through the medieval quarter with its authentic timbered houses and 14th century belfry which houses a unique automaton. In the afternoon, relax on board as the barge continues its cruise to tonight's mooring at Garnat-sur-Engièvre.

Wednesday - Cruise to Decize. Visit Chateau of St Aubin.
Enjoy a full day cruising from Garnat-sur-Engièvre to Decize. Take a private tour of the chateau of St Aubin, a fine example of renaissance architecture with extensive grounds and kitchen gardens.

Thursday - Cruise to Imphy. Visit Château d'Apremont.
After breakfast your guide takes you to a "ferme des escargots" to see how this Burgundian speciality is produced. Later cruise to Chevenon, a small country mooring and a quiet place to walk or cycle. In the afternoon visit the beautiful billage and gardens of Apremont.

Friday - Visit Nevers. Cruise to Pont Canal du Guétin.
This morning enjoy a walking tour of Nevers, the capital of the Nivernais, and a chance to buy some of the distinctive blue and gold faience at the local market. During the afternoon the barge cruises to Pont Canal du Guétin, the site of the "pont canal" which traverses the river Allier. Enjoy a farewell gala dinner on board.

Saturday - Nevers-Paris.
After breakfast disembark the barge and transfer to Nevers station. Return to Paris (Gare de Lyon) on the TGV where you are met by our Afloat in France representative who will assist you with your luggage.
 


Itinerary 3: Digoin to Saint Leger


Sunday - Paris to Le Creusot and Digoin.
Depart Paris, Gare de Lyon, in the afternoon on the TGV train. On arrival at Le Creusot station you are met by the Afloat in France guide who transfers you to the barge at Digoin for your cruise through Burgundy. A champagne reception welcomes you and gives you the chance to meet the crew. Take a brief evening cruise across the Loire river on the canal bridge which connects the Canal du Centre to the Canal Latéral à la Loire.

Monday - Cruise to Paray-le-Monial. Visit La Clayette.
This morning, enjoy a leisurely cruise to Paray Le Monial. After lunch, drive through the countryside to La Clayette to visit the specialty chocolate shop of M. Bernard Dufoux. The master himself will demonstrate the art of making chocolate, followed by a private tasting. Car enthusiasts may tour the vintage car museum just around the corner where all the vehicles are for sale.

Tuesday - Tour Paray-le-Monial. Cruise to Genélard. Visit Cluny.
After breakfast, take a short walk to Paray-le-Monial, with its famous Basilica of the Sacré Coeur and site of pilgrimage since 1873. After lunch, visit Cluny, a little town dominated by its great benedictine abbey.

Wednesday – Visit Montceau les Mines. Cruise to Blanzy. Visit Autun.
This morning, take a short drive to the canal-side market at Montceau les Mines. Later, tour the city of Autun, founded by emperor Augustus and known as one of the leading cities of Roman Gaul. Visit the roman amphitheatre, one of the largest in France with a seating capacity of 17,000.

Thursday - Visit Château Marguerite de Bourgogne. Cruise to St. Julien-sur-Dheune.
Cruise to Montchanin, where you disembark for your trip to Couches. Enjoy lunch in the grounds of the Château Marguerite de Bourgogne and a private wine tasting in the secret passages beneath the chateau. Return to the barge for a late afternoon cruise to St. Julien-sur-Dheune, a small country mooring and a quiet place to walk or bicycle.

Friday - Cruise to St. Léger-sur-Dheune. Visit Beaune.
Today, tour the famous Cote d'Or, home of Burgundy's finest vineyards: Meursault, Puligny, Montrachet, Santenay. Later, visit Beaune, the capital of Burgundy for a tour of the famous 15th century Hôtel Dieu, Hospice de Beaune. Farewell gala dinner on board.

Saturday - Dijon-Paris.
After breakfast disembark the barge and and transfer to Dijon rail station. Return to Paris (Gare de Lyon) on the TGV where you are met by the Afloat in France representative who will assist you with your luggage.

 

 

Itinerary 4: Besancon to Saint-Leger

 

Sunday – Paris to Besançon.
Depart Paris, Gare de Lyon, on the TGV train in the afternoon. On arrival at Dijon station you are met by the Afloat in France guide and transferred to the barge moored beneath the King’s tower of the magnificent Citadelle. A champagne reception gives you a chance to meet the crew. This evening the barge remains in Besançon, giving you the opportunity to view this bustling city.

Monday - Visit Besançon Citadelle. Cruise to Osselle.
The morning cruise is quite spectacular as the barge sails a short distance up the River Doubs before turning into the canal tunnel and passing directly underneath the Citadelle. Emerging on the downstream side of the town you begin the descent of the Doubs Valley until reaching the sleepy town of Osselle. This afternoon, take a tour of Vauban’s imposing Citadelle.

Tuesday - Cruise to Dole. Visit Arbois region and Dole.
The boat continues to cruise downstream, alternating between the river and sections of the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, which traverses the rugged Franche-Comté and Jura regions. Today’s visits are to Arbois, the principal town of the Jura wine producing region, and a walking tour of Dole, including the magnificent cathedral and La Maison Pasteur, home of Louis Pasteur.

Wednesday - Cruise to St. Jean de Losne. Visit Beaune.
This morning relax on board before taking a drive through the beautiful countryside to the Relais & Chateau hotel at Levernois for lunch. Stroll around their grounds before a short drive into Beaune to visit the Hospice de Beaune. This evening’s mooring is at St. Jean de Losne, the barging capital of France. Take some time this evening or early tomorrow to stroll around the port and see the many working and pleasure barges.

Thursday - Cruise to Fragnes. Visit Chateau de Rully.
A morning’s cruise on the River Saône before entering the Canal du Centre. The barge moors at the picturesque village of Fragnes. Visit the Château de Rully, where the Countess de Ternay personally welcomes you on a tour of this medieval fortress.

Friday - Cruise to St.Léger. Visit Couches.
After breakfast, visit Chalon-sur-Saône where the hustle and bustle of the market creates a wonderful atmosphere. A leisurely cruise to St Léger allows you to savor the beauty of the French countryside and reflect on the week’s events. Farewell gala dinner on board.

Saturday – Dijon -Paris.
After breakfast disembark the barge and transfer to Dijon station. Board the TGV to Paris, Gare de Lyon, where you are met by the Afloat in France representative who will assist you with your luggage.


 

Itinerary 5: Besancon to Dijon

 

Sunday - Paris to Besançon.
Depart Paris, Gare de Lyon, on the TGV train in the afternoon. On arrival at Dijon station you are met by the Afloat in France guide and transferred to the barge moored at Besançon. A champagne reception gives you a chance to meet the crew. This evening the barge remains in Besançon, allowing you the opportunity to view this bustling city.

Monday – Cruise to Osselle. Visit the Citadelle.

The barge crosses the plain from the Saône to Dijon on the Canal de Bourgogne. After lunch, tour the Côte d’Or planted with vines that produce some of the world’s most famous wines. Visit “Clos de Vougeot”, a medieval château and the headquarters of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, whose special label is awarded annually to the finest Côte d’Or vintages. On the way back to the barge, stop at the beautiful Château de Longecourt.

Friday – Visit Dijon. Cruise to Dijon.
After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour of Dijon, including a visit to the Ducal Palace, the market, and the Grey Poupon mustard shop. Return to the boat for lunch and an afternoon cruise. Farewell gala dinner on board.

Saturday – Disembark. Dijon to Paris.
After breakfast disembark the barge and transfer to Dijon station for your return to Paris on the TGV. On arrival at Paris Gare de Lyon, you are met by the Afloat in France representative who will assist you with your baggage.

 


 

Itinerary 6: Dijon to Escommes

 
Sunday – Paris to Dijon.
Depart Paris, Gare de Lyon, on the TGV train in the afternoon. On arrival at Dijon station you are met by the Afloat in France guide and transferred to the barge at Dijon’s Port du Canal for your cruise through Burgundy. A champagne reception welcomes you and gives you a chance to meet the crew. A delicious dinner is served later that evening.

Monday - Cruise to Fleurey-sur-Ouche. Visit Clos de Vougeot.
Leaving Dijon, the canal follows the river Ouche where small-unspoiled villages and green, forested hills provide exceptional views from the deck. This afternoon’s excursion is a dégustation in Vougeot and a visit to “Clos de Vougeot”, a medieval château and the headquarters of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, whose special label is awarded annually to the finest Côte d’Or vintages. The barge moors for the night in Fleury-sur-Ouche.

Tuesday – Cruise to Gissey. Visit Dijon.
After breakfast, while the barge cruises to Gissey, your guide takes you on a walking tour of Dijon including a visit to the Ducal Palace, the market and the Grey Poupon mustard shop. Return to the boat for lunch and an afternoon’s cruise to the charming village of Gissey.

Wednesday - Cruise to La Bussière. Visit Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune
Mid-morning, disembark the boat for a visit to l’Abbaye de la Bussière, which was built in the 12th century under the guidance of the Cistercian monks from Citeaux. Enjoy a tour of the grounds and have lunch in the one Michelin star restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the 15th century Château de Savigny-lès-Baune set in its own vineyard and housing a huge collection of antique motorbikes, cars and planes.

Thursday – Cruise to Pont d’Ouche. Visit Beaune.
Relax with a morning cruise through the rolling hills of the Ouche Valley to Pont d’Ouche. After lunch visit Beaune, capital of the wine region of Burgundy and the famous Hôtel-Dieu, Hospice de Beaune. Sample some of the local wines before returning to the barge.

Friday - Cruise to Escommes. Visit Châteauneuf-en-Auxois.
Cruise to Escommes then after lunch visit Châteauneuf-en-Auxois. Both the village and the château have a long and interesting history. This is followed by a tour of the surrounding countryside. Farewell gala dinner on board.

Saturday – Dijon -Paris.
After breakfast disembark the barge and transfer to Dijon station. Board the TGV to Paris, Gare de Lyon, where you are met by the Afloat in France representative who will assist you with your luggage.

 


Itinerary 7: Escommes to Saint-Jean


Sunday – Paris to Dijon.
Depart Paris, Gare de Lyon, on the TGV train in the afternoon. On arrival at Dijon station you are met by the Afloat in France guide and transferred to the barge at Escommes for your cruise through Burgundy. A champagne reception gives you a chance to meet the crew. Later that evening; enjoy your first dining experience on board.

Monday – Cruise to La Bussière. Visit Châteauneuf en Auxois.
After breakfast, enjoy your first day cruising on the Canal de Bourgogne. Small-unspoiled villages and green, forested hills provide exceptional views from the deck. This afternoon, visit the lovely hill-top village of Châteauneuf en Auxois.

Tuesday – Cruise to Fleurey-sur-Ouche. Tour Beaune.
Relax on-board this morning as the barge cruises toward the charming village of Fleurey sur Ouche. After lunch your guide takes you to visit Beaune, capital of the wine region of Burgundy and the famous Hôtel Dieu, Hospice de Beaune.

Wednesday – Cruise to Dijon. Visit La Bussière and Chateau de Commarin.
Visit the Abbey la Bussière built in the 12thcentury under the guidance of the Cistercian monks from Cluny. After a stroll in the grounds we have lunch in the one Michelin star restaurant. In the afternoon we visit the Château de Commarin, an interesting castle that has been continuously occupied since it was built in the 14th century.

Thursday - Cruise to Longecourt. Visit Clos de Vougeot and Longecourt.
Tour the Côte d’Or, planted with vines that produce some of the world’s most famous wines and visit some of the finest wine producers in France. Visit the Clos de Vougeot, a medieval chateau and the head quarters of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, whose special label is awarded annually to the finest Cote d’Or vintages. On the way back to the barge visit the Château de Longecourt.

Friday - Cruise to St Jean. Visit Dijon.
This morning your guide takes you on a walking tour of Dijon. Visit the Ducal Palace, the market and the Grey Poupon mustard shop. During the day the barge slowly makes its way to its final mooring at St Jean. Farewell gala dinner on board.

Saturday - Dijon to Paris.
After breakfast disembark the barge and transfer to Dijon station. Board the TGV to Paris, Gare de Lyon, where you are met by the Afloat in France representative who will assist you with your luggage.
