Beyond such sensuous pleasures are many layers of history.

This stretch coastline was the first place in Gaul to be settled by the Romans, their enduring legacy evident in the great amphitheatre at Nîmes and the magnificent engineering of the Pont du Gard.

One visit is not enough to see a fraction of all the attractions the area has to offer: the medieval fortified city of Carcassonne, the Cathar castles of Queribus and Peyrepertuse.

In parts, the region remains wild and untamed but it also has the most youthful and progressive cities: Montpellier, the ancient university city and capital of the region and Nîmes with its exuberant feria and bullfights. The whole area is typified by an insouciance mixture of ancient and modern, from Roman temples and post-modern architecture in its cities to solar power and ancient abbeys in the mountains.

Cycle, walk, fish, swim and canoe along and in the crystal clear waters of the rivers of Orb, Cesse and Aude or splash under the waterfall beneath the ancient village of Roquebrun. Discover the Roman remains in Nîmes, the famous Pont du Gard: stunning gorges, grottoes, canyons and the magnificent vineyards of the Minervois and Corbieres where the patrons of a hundred different caves eagerly await your appreciation of their wines.
