Its name changed in 1990 from Côtes-du-Nord.
One reason put forward to justify the change was that there was
geographical confusion with the département Nord, but it was also
considered that a name suggesting the seaside (ar mor
meaning the sea in Breton) would be more marketable as a
tourism destination than a name suggesting northernness. The name
also has a historical connotation recalling the Roman province of Armorica. |
